Study Spots
While the Miller Learning Center, Main Library, and Science Learning Center are all great on-campus places to study, there are endless options in the immediate Athens area. Here are some of my favorites based on location, coffee, and ambiance.
The Rook and Pawn
- Location: 294 West Washington Street
- Description: A Board Game Cafe that offers cocktails, coffee, and food.
- Phone: (706) 543-5040
- Qualities: The Rook and Pawn is my go-to spot for getting work done. It truly captures the essence of Athens' laid-back, creative vibe. For just $7, you can enjoy access to an entire wall of board games for the day, making it the perfect blend of productivity and fun. With its cozy atmosphere and unique charm, it's an ideal study spot. Plus, it's open late, which is a dream for night owls like me.
Jittery Joes
- Location: The one depicted here is located at 1230 South Milledge Avenue, but there are over 6 locations in the immediate Athens area.
- Description: Classic coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating.
- Phone: (706) 208-1979
- Qualities: As I mentioned, Jittery Joe's is a local coffee chain with several locations around Athens. This one, nestled in the heart of Five Points, is within walking distance of most of campus. With excellent coffee, friendly service, and plenty of space to study-whether inside or outside-it's an Athens staple for good reason.
Hendershot's
- Location: 237 Prince Avenue
- Description: A local favorite for music, art, culture and coffee.
- Phone: (706) 353-3050
- Qualities: Hendershot's is the perfect study spot for those who thrive in a livelier atmosphere. With ample space, tables for working, and a stage that hosts live music, open mics, comedy, and more, it offers a vibrant environment. As both a coffee shop and a bar, it’s ideal for bringing your work and settling in for a few hours. Owned by a local couple with a deep passion for community and the arts, Hendershot's truly reflects the diverse spirit of Athens
