The Arch
The UGA Arch is one of the university’s most iconic symbols—and steeped in tradition. Legend has it that students shouldn’t walk under the Arch until they’ve received their diploma, or they risk never graduating. Many avoid it completely until commencement, making that first walk a true rite of passage.

Freshman Welcome Picture
Another cherised tradition is the Freshman Welcome Picture. It is known as one of only two times that students will step foot between the hedges; for this picture and for graduation. Freshmen are instructed to wear red and black, and are strategically placed into the shape of a G to capture this iconic photo.
Ringing the Chapel Bell
Since 1894, when UGA’s football team first defeated Auburn, the Chapel Bell has been a symbol of celebration. Standing in its wooden tower on North Campus, it’s rung for everything from football victories to admissions, exam passes, and graduations. No matter the occasion, make sure to ring it during your time in Athens!

Herty Field Fountain
Found on North Campus, the Herty Field Fountain is another classic symbol of UGA. It is tradition for first year students to jump in the fountain on the first day of class, and for graduates to jump in the fountain after graduation as a form of celebration.
Snellibrate
Snelling is one of UGA’s five dining commons. Tucked into the far side of South Campus, Snelling is open to students 24 hours four days of the week. It is a tradition for students to “Snellibrate” a success by going to enjoy food at any hour with friends.

Frat Beach
Every year, for both Halloween and the Georgia vs. Florida football game, thousands of UGA students flock to St. Stimons Island, Georgia for “Frat Beach”. It is known as the largest outdoor cocktail party in the world, with students dressing in obscure Halloween costumes and spending the day on the beach.
